New Delhi witnessed a formidable display of opposition unity at the “Loktantra Bachao Rally” held at Ramlila Maidan. Leaders from various parties voiced concerns over the alleged misuse of central investigative agencies by the BJP to undermine democracy.

Congress’s Priyanka Gandhi Vadra presented five demands to the Election Commission, emphasizing the need for a level playing field before elections and halting actions by enforcement agencies against opposition parties. The alliance also called for a Supreme Court-monitored investigation into the BJP’s alleged exploitation of funds through electoral bonds.

Rahul Gandhi of Congress warned against the BJP’s potential to subvert democracy, urging support for democratic values. Other leaders echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding the Constitution and the republic. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann highlighted the ideological strength of Arvind Kejriwal, portraying him as more than just an individual.

The rally marked a significant moment of opposition solidarity, especially amidst recent differences within the bloc. Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress, despite earlier reservations, affirmed its commitment to the opposition alliance, viewing the struggle as one against the BJP’s authoritarian tendencies.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the BJP campaign in Uttar Pradesh, but opposition leaders like Akhilesh Yadav remained undeterred, criticizing the BJP’s actions, including the imprisonment of elected chief ministers. BJP spokespersons dismissed the rally as a cover-up for corruption allegations, pointing fingers at the Congress’s history of scandals.

In essence, the rally symbolized a unified opposition front against perceived threats to democracy, with leaders rallying behind common demands and principles while facing off against the BJP’s counter-narrative.
